Carlyn Clark

Carlyn Clark Design Studio

La Canada Flintridge, CA, United States

I’m a fiber artist, mender, and workshop teacher in Los Angeles. My practice treats visible mending as both art and quiet resistance to consumer culture. I’ve bought no new art materials since 2019, working instead from inherited and gathered fabric, dye, and thread. I’m drawn to how cloth carries the people who used it, and I teach mending as knowledge passed down through the hands.

About the practice

My practice centers on natural dyes, surface design, and visible mending. Raised in a generational tradition of maker-menders, my work is guided by the belief that materials carry the physical presence of those who held them before. Repair is both an act of care and a quiet resistance against a culture driven by rapid consumption and novelty. My process layers harvested and foraged plant dyes with painting, printing, hand-stitching, and structural fabric manipulation. I teach embroidery, mending and dye workshops across Southern California.
