About the practice
The sustainable Bolivian luxury label Juan de La Paz—founded by designers Juan Carlos Pereira and Andrés Jordan—has gained international acclaim for its pioneering approach to upcycling, specifically through their transformation of vintage 1920s Bolivian chola blankets and mantones into contemporary high fashion. By recycling these historic textiles, the brand merges ancestral Andean craftsmanship with modern, genderless design while championing indigenous cultural representation. Juan de La Paz works directly with over 30 artisan communities across Bolivia and Peru. Instead of discarding damaged, centuries-old family blankets that are no longer usable for their original functions, the designers carefully clean, restore, and cut the fabrics to ensure that no part of the historic, handmade salta (patterned sections) or pampa (solid blocks) goes to waste
