EX/BOYFRIEND is a Mexico City-based upcycling project by designer Laura Carrillo Olin, created under her label Boyfriend’s Shirt. It reworks quality secondhand menswear and factory offcuts into genderless, one-of-a-kind tailoring, skirts, shirts and outerwear, turning post-breakup clothing into pieces with a rough, playful elegance.

About the practice

EX/BOYFRIEND grew out of Boyfriend’s Shirt, a Mexican brand founded in 2014 by Laura Carrillo Olin, with Cristina Lourenco as CEO. While Boyfriend’s Shirt focuses on versatile shirting, tailoring and outerwear, EX/BOYFRIEND is its experimental upcycling arm: a project built around the idea that “the perfect partner doesn’t exist, but if we take the clothes you took from your exes and mix them together, we can make the perfect garment.” The brand presents its work not as conventional seasonal collections but as an ongoing stream of unique pieces. Each garment differs in colour, print or composition because it begins with the materials available: shirts in good condition, surplus fabric from factory rolls, and other salvaged menswear. EX/BOYFRIEND debuted at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week México, where its tape-print suits and reworked tailoring positioned the project within a more accessible form of high-end, sustainable fashion. Carrillo Olin frames sustainability as social as well as environmental. She emphasises fair working conditions, fair pay and the need for the entire production process—not only the finished garment—to be responsible.
