About the practice
As a Fiber Artist nestled in the serene heights of the Nilgiri mountains, my journey has been deeply informed by my background in Fine Arts and Textile Design, complemented by my experiences as a visiting faculty in Basic Design and Textile courses. My practice embodies a commitment to sustainability, rooted in the rich traditions of resourcefulness that have characterized Indian craft for centuries. In my creative process, I embrace the beauty of garment off-cuts, breathing new life into what would otherwise be discarded. These remnants serve as the canvas for my fiber books, quilts, garments, and fashion accessories, where hand embroidery, patchwork, and applique are my primary mediums of expression. I occasionally explore crochet, hand knitting, and eco-dyeing, all of which contribute to the narrative of my work. Mending, repurposing, and recycling are not just techniques but essential values that permeate my lifestyle. Whether it involves fabric, food, or other resources, my aim is to utilize them judiciously, learning from the wisdom of sustainable practices that resonate with my environment. My creative endeavors are a reflection of these philosophies, creating not only unique products but also a dialogue with the past and present. The slow, meditative nature of handwork allows me to delve into details, creating pieces that are not only aesthetically captivating but also deeply personal. My environment continually inspires me; the wildlife, the changing seasons, and my garden populate the recurring themes in my works. The isolation of my mountain home is balanced by the connections I foster through social media, my book club, and cherished conversations with friends and family. Ultimately, my art is a chronicle of my life—an exploration of sustainability, creativity, and the interconnectedness of all living things, inviting others to reflect on their relationship with the world around them.
