About the practice
Melissa Ferreira Schwager was born in Montreal and influenced by her mother’s work in large-scale garment production. After moving to Vancouver, she established Adhesif Clothing in 2003, drawing on more than 20 years of experience as a professional vintage clothing buyer and a lifelong interest in textiles. Adhesif began as a Vancouver-based clothing company producing locally made, memorable one-of-a-kind pieces from quality recycled materials. Ferreira Schwager built the label around the belief that vintage and reclaimed textiles often offer superior quality, distinctive character and a story worth continuing. In 2021, Ferreira Schwager relocated the brand’s home and headquarters to the German countryside near Frankfurt. She now operates a permanent studio and showroom in Königstein im Taunus, where she designs, sources, cuts and makes each piece by hand. The brand’s work spans patchwork cardigans and vests, reconstructed denim, botanical-printed silk kimonos, hand-dyed cashmere, Panoma pants and upcycled outerwear. Each garment is made with up to 95% recycled and vintage materials, positioning Adhesif within the slow-fashion movement and a design practice centred on longevity, individuality and material reuse.
