PLASTICITY is a Tokyo-based upcycling brand founded by Aki Saito that transforms discarded plastic umbrellas into bags, wallets and small accessories. Using its original heat-press method, it creates GLASS RAIN, a layered material made from four umbrella canopies, giving each product a unique finish while diverting vinyl waste from landfill

About the practice
PLASTICITY was launched in 2020 by designer Aki Saito and produced by Mondo Design. Its starting point was Japan’s disposable-umbrella problem: around 80 million umbrellas are consumed annually, and many are made from vinyl that is difficult to recycle and often ends up in landfill. The brand collects discarded vinyl umbrellas and turns them into GLASS RAIN, an original material made by heat-pressing four layers of umbrella plastic. Rather than chemically transforming the vinyl, PLASTICITY preserves its waterproof, easy-care qualities while creating a thicker, durable sheet for bag-making. Each item is individual, carrying traces of the umbrella it came from—its colour, markings and journey through the city. The brand describes itself as “a brand that should disappear in 10 years,” expressing its hope that plastic pollution and the need for its intervention will eventually be solved. PLASTICITY also runs an umbrella-collection programme, inviting people to send in used umbrellas as material for future products. Its work connects waste reduction, community participation and design-led circularity.
