RAORI Slow Fashion

RAORI Slow Fashion

Uppsala, Almunge, Sweden

RAORI is a Swedish Slow Fashion brand, transforming textile waste into unique fashion garments before the material has a chance to become rubbish in yet another landfill. After saving a container full of beautiful tablecloths and lace from being thrown away in Brussels in 2009, the Remake Designer Hanna Westergren Gendebien, began making unique garments from the material instead.

About the practice

RAORI transforms textile waste into up-cycled couture: minimalist and feminine garments with a poetic touch, suitable for both formal occasions and everyday wear. Drawing on a foundation of textile craftsmanship, Japanese zero-waste construction of kimonos and industrial textile production, RAORI combines a simple and minimalist design aesthetic with a great fit and sustainable details. The garments are unique, comfortable, locally produced and can be personalised to suit different women’s body shapes. Background: RAORI is a nominated Swedish Slow Fashion brand, based in Uppsala, Sweden. Having worked as a fashion designer, textiles teacher and pattern maker, and having witnessed the dark side of a linear fashion industry, Hanna Westergren Gendebien launched the RAORI Slow Fashion brand in Brussels in 2009 with the aim of using discarded textiles as a circular resource rather than allowing them to end up in the bin. This led to a realisation of the dark side of the fashion industry and a desire to change it. The practice and materials: By creating exclusive limited collections where the material decides the design, RAORI creates comfortable everyday garments from textile waste that was originally heading to the bin. By working together with recycling plants, second hand shops and private donations, the material is transformed from trash to unique wearable pieces, both for events, galas, but also for everyday wear. RAORI also offers Wear Your Memories, where your grandma's old table cloth can become a measure made unique Fashion item. Shop RAORI: Customers find us at local pop ups and Slow Fashion fairs, but mainly through our online shop RAORI.se, where customers can find everything from unique one of a kind-garments and accessories to Made to Measure pieces (Wear your Memories) and also the possibility to rent garments. Other: RAORI also offers courses, Remake workshops, inspirational lectures about Sustainable style and Slow Fashion as well as organising local Fashion Shows to bring awareness to a future circular fashion industry.
