About the practice
SIM K is an independent fashion label founded by designer Simona Kyosovska in Bulgaria in 2024. Working primarily with denim, the brand explores the possibilities of reconstruction, transforming existing garments and leftover materials into contemporary, expressive designs. The process often starts with second-hand jeans, sourced from friends, family, clients, acquaintances and second-hand sellers. Each pair comes with its own history, colour, fading and signs of wear. Rather than trying to erase these traces, I use them as part of the design language, allowing the original characteristics of the material to influence the final piece. Through deconstruction, layering, reconstruction and an asymmetrical play of textures and shades of blue, familiar denim garments are given a new form and purpose. I also work with deadstock fabrics, end-of-roll materials and leftover scraps from my own production, finding ways to incorporate them into new designs. SIM K is a small-scale, hands-on practice. I personally oversee the entire process, from sourcing and selecting materials to design, pattern cutting and garment finishing, collaborating with local seamstresses on selected pieces. Each creation is approached individually, with an emphasis on thoughtful construction, versatility and longevity. The collections combine one-of-a-kind pieces with limited editions and made-to-order designs. For me, upcycling is first and foremost a design approach. I want to explore its creative potential beyond the familiar aesthetics associated with sustainable fashion, creating pieces that stand on their own through their character, construction and visual identity. Sustainability is embedded in the way I work, rather than being the only story I want the clothes to tell.
