About the practice
Upcycle Newcastle was founded on the belief that discarded materials are not waste but the beginning of something new. As a project of Transition Newcastle, it responds to the environmental impact of textile waste with practical, creative and community-led solutions. The organisation collects clothing and textiles that might otherwise be discarded, including T-shirts, jeans and other garments donated by Samaritans Op Shops and by the local community. By using these materials locally, Upcycle Newcastle helps prevent them from going to landfill or being shipped overseas to countries already dealing with large volumes of clothing waste. Its Upcycle Newcastle team turns those donations into useful products, including hats, bags, purses, denim tea cosies and bowl cosies. These are sold through its Shed Shop and online store, with proceeds supporting the organisation’s education and waste-reduction work. Beyond making products, Upcycle Newcastle runs workshops, courses and events at its Shed, in schools and across the Newcastle and Hunter region. These activities teach repair and creative-reuse skills, helping people extend the life of the clothing and textiles they already own.
