About the practice
Purple Aster Vintage grew from Samantha Morrice’s enduring love of vintage and sustainable clothing. The business cares deeply about the environmental cost of fashion, particularly the number of garments with remaining potential that end up in landfill. The shop sources clothing from private collections, estates and estate sales, garage sales, thrift stores and donations. Sam prioritises pieces that need mending or restoration, spending considerable time cleaning, caring for and preparing items before they reach the shop floor or online store. Alongside curated vintage, Purple Aster creates upcycled and recycled pieces. These include hand-crafted blanket coats made from recycled fleece blankets, ruffled blouses reworked from existing textiles, and tie-front vests made from reclaimed towels. Each upcycled piece is one of a kind and handmade in Canada. The business is deliberately small-scale: the Saskatoon storefront is a one-person operation, with no additional employees. Closed days are used for sourcing, restoration, order preparation, shipping and back-of-house work.
