About the practice
eet Aus is an Estonian fashion designer, researcher and entrepreneur who has spent more than a decade developing practical ways to reduce fashion’s environmental footprint. Her label, established in 2012, makes garments from textile leftovers generated during manufacturing—fabric residues, cut pieces and roll ends that would commonly be landfilled or incinerated. With the Stockholm Environment Institute Tallinn Centre, Aus developed UPMADE®, a circular business model and certification system for industrial-scale upcycling. It combines software that maps factory waste and calculates resource savings, a design service that turns those leftovers into new garments, and certification covering material traceability, chemical safety, social responsibility and workplace standards. The approach has been adopted by brands and manufacturers in Europe, Bangladesh and India. In its first five years, UPMADE reported saving more than 174 million litres of water, over 108 tonnes of CO2 and nearly 13 tonnes of textile waste from landfill. Reet Aus’s own UPMADE® Collection won the German Ecodesign Award in 2023, and the brand is a member of the United Nations Fashion and Lifestyle Network. It also works locally in Estonia through its Trash to Trend studio, offering repair, upcycling and community-facing activity alongside its commercial work.
